The Benefits of Model United Nations: Why You Should Join MUN
Interpersonal Benefits
For some, Model UN seems like a waste of time and effort, and the UN doesn’t really make any real changes for the world. Some even believe that you wouldn’t get anything out of participating in a conference that goes from 9am to 6pm for 3 days straight. However, this misleading notion is totally false. As the world moves on to the 21st century, diplomacy plays an even bigger role in maintaining world peace. Along with the huge increase in demand for the scarce resources, countries all around the world scramble to find a solution to the problem of this century. As an intergovernmental organization, the UN acts as a medium for countries to sit together and discuss the problems that we, the people of the 21st century are facing. With the aim of allowing the younger generations to understand the importance of diplomacy and cooperation, MUN encourages people to speak up in order to save the planet and to voice their opinions about problems that are around them. Aside from helping participants to develop skills that are beneficial for themselves, Model UN further encourages participants to take action towards the planet and the problems that they can identify around them. Being more conscious of their surroundings also means understanding the importance of taking action.
Personal Benefits
In addition to being a very meaningful activity, Model UN allows participants to become a better version of themselves. In order to excel in a MUN conference, delegates need to equip themselves with a substantial amount of knowledge. Thus Model UN pushes these delegates to collect information that is related to the topic as well as thinking of solutions to these problems. By just preparing for a MUN conference, delegates are training themselves how to better look for information while checking the credibility of their information sources, this by itself is already an essential skill as they grow up. Moreover, as delegates step into the conference room, they will need to learn how to negotiate with others to achieve a goal that is favourable for them. Not only can they develop good negotiation skills through MUN but they can also brush up on their public speaking skills which is required when they are speaking in front of a huge mass. Most importantly, delegates cultivate their leadership skills through leading their committees. Eventually, they will learn that being a leader is not just about being the top but it is also about getting others involved. In a nutshell, MUN pushes participants to get better and acquire skills such as:
Researching
Public Speaking
Negotiation
Leadership
All in all, Model UN provides an extensive amount of valuable skills to its participants. With all of these benefits, it would be a huge waste to not join MUN. At The Global Citizen (TGC) Education Group, we believe that youths can develop awareness of their surroundings through Model UN. As such, we provide a wide variety of MUN conferences, workshops and camps where youths can get the most out of MUN.
