What is Direct School Admission all about?

Drag to resize
Since 2004, Singapore’s Ministry of Education introduced the Direct School Admission (DSA) scheme for Primary 6 students to apply to a secondary school based on their talent in sports, CCAs and specific academic areas. It aims to recognise students with specific domain talents and achievements instead of general academic ability.

The DSA process officially starts at Primary 6, when students explore school choices, apply, attend interviews or auditions, select their preferred schools and receive the school allocation results. In order to get a head start, students should start as early as Primary 2 to prepare for the DSA Exercise by honing their skills and talents, participating in performances or competitions, and getting certifications.

DSA Prep for Drama

Through our Preparing for DSA Drama programme, students will gain an awareness of speech sounds and improve articulation, be able to communicate characters, poems and stories with clarity and expression, and develop their confidence and competence in interacting and working with a variety of peers, in a variety of contexts. Students will also be given activities that will allow them to overcome their fear and inhibitions of performing or presenting their ideas before an audience in a variety of speaking situations e.g. storytelling, impromptu speaking and persuasive speaking. Students will also be guided by our coaches to prepare for certifications and exams that they would take from London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and Trinity College London as well as be given opportunities to participate in external performances and showcases to develop their performance experience.
DSA Prep for Public Speaking

Through our Preparing for DSA Public Speaking programme, students will be empowered with persuasive speech; logical reasoning; the ability to understand and read people’s reactions; and the willingness to listen to others’ arguments, even if it is conflicting. Debating engages students in real, complex social problems while forcing them to understand both sides of an issue deeply and communicate their positions clearly. All students in DSA Prep for Public Speaking will have the opportunity to receive communication certificates from London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and Trinity College London.
DSA Prep for Debate
Through our Preparing for DSA Debate programme, students will work on developing and refining their debating and argument skills. Students will learn argumentation basics, rebuttal tactics, style, strategy and case planning techniques. Debating engages students in real, complex social problems while forcing them to understand both sides of an issue deeply and communicate their positions clearly. All students in DSA prep for Debate will also be given opportunities to expand their debating experience through debate competitions and conferences.

All students in our DSA Prep programmes will also develop the ability to present themselves appropriately and confidently during an interview. Expect to instil a sense of confidence in public speaking and effective communication, and have a firm grasp of general interview requirements and skills required for the DSA application.
